The Road to FOX – Haast Pass
The road from Wanaka in Central Otago to Fox Glacier in South Westland, is known as the Haast Pass. Starting alongside lakes Wanaka and Hawea (created by glaciers in the ice age) the road climbs up and over the Main Divide of the South Island in the Southern Alps. From the summit it descends through the ‘Gates of Haast’ and then down the Haast River valley to the sea, before traversing north through native bush and rainforest until it reaches Fox Glacier.
